What is a Video Server?
A video server digitizes analog video signals and sends digital images over an IP network, such as a LAN, intranet or Internet. It turns an analog video system into a network video system and enables users to view live images using a Web browser or video management software on any networked computer.
A video server makes it possible to create a network video system without discarding existing analog equipment and integrates with an existing analog CCTV (closed circuit television) system. A video server brings new functionality to analog equipment and eliminates the need for special cabling, monitors and DVRs because the video recording uses standard PC servers.
One of the main benefits is remote accessibility. With a video server, authorized viewers from different locations have simultaneous access to images from the same analog or network camera.
An IP-based surveillance system gives you the ability to monitor and secure equipment, people, property, and facilities remotely from any networked computer. You can also remotely control existing equipment such as pan/tilt/zoom devices or time-lapse tape recorders. A video server can be connected to a wide variety of specialized devices, such as a miniature or microscope camera.
